The purchase by Trust for Public Land was the outcome of a settlement negotiated between the State and the City when the State brought a legal challenge to the City auction of gardens and was poised to win. See http://www.nytimes.com/2002/04/26/nyregion/city-in-talks-to-end-lawsuit-over-community-gardens.html and http://www.mas.org/community-gardens-lawsuit-settles/; New York Restoration Project bought the parcels they chose while the lawsuit was on-going.

N.B.2 Bqlt was incubated by Trust for Publuc Land but is now a completely independent gardener-led organization.paula z. segalhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07393949288331718910noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14731145.post-41131371140707273872010-07-26T17:36:44.156-04:002010-07-26T17:36:44.156-04:00And yeah: that quote about temporary spaces made m...And yeah: that quote about temporary spaces made my head explode then, too. Such BS. Community gardens in NYC are only temporary because the city won't make them permanent.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14731145.post-90976430224843827452010-07-26T17:35:23.907-04:002010-07-26T17:35:23.907-04:00I know this is all old news but I couldn't agr...I know this is all old news but I couldn't agree more. NYRP has no insight into the "community" end of community gardens. I wouldn't object to the Target Garden if they weren't trying to impose the same rules on thriving community spaces under their purview.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14731145.post-52931277399131690642008-11-12T22:48:00.000-05:002008-11-12T22:48:00.000-05:00Here in Flatbush, green space abounds, but it's al...Here in Flatbush, green space abounds, but it's all on private property. I'm all for more green space, but converting community gardens to parks is robbing Peter to pay Paul.

That some community gardens may operate as "private social clubs" - a complaint which was not raised in the Times article - is not in dispute. It's a lie to claim that "most" of them are. Community gardens are cooperative community enterprises, operated by volunteers, not by paid staff. They are open to community members willing to work on the collective task of managing and maintaining the garden. For that effort, members get to perform activities they would be arrested for doing in a public park.

For these reasons, community gardens are not for everyone. They don't have to be. I recognize the need for playgrounds and athletic fields, even though I can't use them. These are other examples of green spaces which are available to some of the public, but not all.

Community gardens serve a unique purpose, one which cannot be met by any other type of green space. They should not all require conversion to corporate parks.

So, no, I'm not going to "ease up."Chris Kreussling (Flatbush Gardener)https://www.blogger.com/profile/08467595231097695124noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14731145.post-31686767769022308042008-11-12T19:58:00.000-05:002008-11-12T19:58:00.000-05:00At least this green space is open to the public ev...At least this green space is open to the public every day and can be used in many of ways. Most community gardens are glorified private social clubs and are not inviting at all to local residents. I think we need to move past the vernacular and just enjoy these spaces and others for what they are-open green spaces. There are places for the community gardens you are representing and spaces like these. Ease up and remember that this space has been preserved as green space for perpetuity...that is a great thing for us and generations to follow.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14731145.post-82378993047742066292008-11-08T11:13:00.000-05:002008-11-08T11:13:00.000-05:00I will link to this post, I think its important.
